How it is worked out
Each month’s instalment is P × (1 + s) raised to the number of whole years gone; each grows by (1 + i) for every month left.
P is the first year’s monthly instalment, s the yearly rise and i the yearly return ÷ 12. With a 0% return the value is the sum of the instalments.
Left out: capital gains tax, exit loads, stamp duty and changes in the scheme’s costs.
Questions
01What does the yearly rise do?
It raises the instalment once a year, after every 12 instalments. At a 10% rise, ₹5,000 a month becomes ₹5,500 a month in year 2 and ₹11,790 a month in year 10.
02Is this the value my SIP will reach?
No one can know that. The result is arithmetic at the return you enter. Mutual fund returns are not fixed; they can be higher or lower than you assume, and they can be negative.
03Are tax and costs included?
No. Capital gains tax, exit loads and stamp duty are left out. Enter a return after the scheme’s costs if you want to allow for them.
